New York (United States), 1909 – 1970
American painter who became a film director in 1945 with her first work Visual Variations on Noguchi, a rhythmic exploration of Noguchi's curvilinear sculptures. Along with Willard Maas (her husband) and Maya Deren, Marie Menken formed the basis of the avant-garde movement of the 1940s in New York. Her work stands out for distancing herself from the literary influence and the pictorial symbolism in force in many experimental works of her time.
