Like Godard’s Histoire(s) du cinéma, The Thoughts That Once We Had brings together multiple fragments of unidentified but often recognisable films from the last century, with the peculiarity that they are structured by associations, citations and concepts taken from texts about the cinema by philosopher Gilles Deleuze, The Movement Image and The Time Image. The borrowed sequences set out not to explain Deleuze’s ideas, but to give them form without overlooking their ambiguity and nuance. This succession submerges the spectator (who is not necessarily familiar with Deleuzian theories) in a deeply rhythmic, meditative experience.
