Eye/Machine II

“How is it possible to continue making the distinction between "man" and "machine" given current technology? In modern weapon technology, categories change constantly: intelligence is no longer limited to humans. In Eye/Machine II Farocki combines visual material from both the military and civil sectors, showing machines that work intelligently and what they see when working on the basis of image processing programs. The traditional man-machine distinction is reduced to "eye/machine", since the cameras are implanted in the machines as if they were eyes. As a consequence of the Gulf War, war technology was presented as an innovative impulse that stimulated the development of civil production. Farocki shows us simulated computer images similar to those of science fiction films: missiles that go towards islands located in a bright sea; apartment blocks that explode; fighter planes that shoot each other with missiles and defend themselves with virtual flares... Will these battlefields be enough by computer or will we need more rationalisation offensives for new wars? Eye/Machine II is the continuation of a broader study on the same subject: intelligent machines and smart weapons.” Antje Ehmann
