The ingenuous adverts of the before-and-after type, featuring people who’ve lost weight or miraculously gained a full head of hair, gave birth to a visual argument that says a lot about how photography transformed our idea of time and what we could do with it. The same trick—comparing documents of before and after, also served to make us realize what we have done with our cities and landscapes. And it is not always positive. New technologies have helped to make this compression and expansion of time something habitual, at the service of vanity and the demiurge.
