Translations of the landscape

A cameraless film workshop with Eduardo Filippi

Participants
Eduardo Filippi

In collaboration with L’Alternativa Festival, Xcèntric presents a cameraless film workshop that emulates the practices of outdoor painting to explore our environment and “translate” it into abstractions on analogue film.

The workshop begins with an introduction to experimental film, particularly cameraless film made by making additions to the support, starting with a commentated viewing of a series of works from the Xcèntric Archive. We will then prepare our devices, materials and tools, and go outside. Using all kinds of paints, markers, felt-tip pens, brushes, inks and dyes, we will abstract the forms, geometries, colours and textures of the landscape, taking it to the filmic medium that will provide a blank canvas. Finally, we’ll go back inside to screen the results and share our reflections with the group.

“If I were to paint the abstraction in the open air of all that on a strip of film [...], my desire would be to absorb everything available to sight [...]: the movements of the eye as it contemplates, the electrical discharges of synaptic thought, the ‘translations’—somehow—of optical impressions into memorabilia.”

Por un arte de la visión, Stan Brakhage, 1995.
