The workshop begins with an introduction to experimental film, particularly cameraless film made by making additions to the support, starting with a commentated viewing of a series of works from the Xcèntric Archive. We will then prepare our devices, materials and tools, and go outside. Using all kinds of paints, markers, felt-tip pens, brushes, inks and dyes, we will abstract the forms, geometries, colours and textures of the landscape, taking it to the filmic medium that will provide a blank canvas. Finally, we’ll go back inside to screen the results and share our reflections with the group.
“If I were to paint the abstraction in the open air of all that on a strip of film [...], my desire would be to absorb everything available to sight [...]: the movements of the eye as it contemplates, the electrical discharges of synaptic thought, the ‘translations’—somehow—of optical impressions into memorabilia.”
