The Animal Within and Without

The films by Americans S. Brakhage and J. J. Murphy and Canadian Jack Chambers presented in this session are reports on the cycles of life: a decomposing dog in the woods, a dead rabbit by the roadside, scenes of breeding, hunting and killing animals caught up in urban life… All the films repeat the terrible image of a dead animal that marks the time of the scenes. The force of this image violently presents the disposability of animals in human eyes and portrays the violence of industrial civilization to nature. In The Hart of London, Chambers works with this series of contrasts—death/life, nature/civilization, man/animal—juxtaposing colour and black and white images, film footage and archive material.
