Musical portraits (I): Step Across the Border

The CCCB's cinema

Xcèntric presents two sessions dedicated to the music documentary. Two feature films that explore the creativity and the states of mind of two inspired musicians, guitarist Fred Frith and singer and jazz trumpeter Chet Baker, the former at a peak of artistic mastery, the latter, devastated, in the twilight of his career and his life.

A capricious, provocative documentary about composer, improviser and multi-instrumentalist Fred Frith’s conception of sound and music. The camera follows the musician across Europe, Japan and the US, working and playing with a series of artists such as Jonas Mekas, John Spacely and Julia Judge. The filmmaker, musician and poet Werner Penzel (Cologne, 1950) played in several rock bands in Germany in the sixties, joined the Brazilian theatre company Óficina in the seventies and, in 1987, along with the writer, painter and filmmaker Nicolas Humbert (1958), set up CineNomad, a company that produced documentaries where music and art overlap.
