Argentan (France), 1881 - Gif-sur-Yvette (France), 1955
French painter assigned to cubism and constructivism, who also stands out for his achievements in commercial posters and other types of applied art. Since 1910, he regularly exhibited at the Salón de los Independientes. Most of his first paintings have a cubist character. Along with Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso, Léger played an important role in the evolution and spread of cubism. Léger’s next stage was influenced by his experiences in the First World War. He began his so-called mechanical period in which he used many symbols from the industrial world. Léger's work exerted an important influence on Soviet constructivism. At the same time, he stood out as a producer of stained-glass windows and mosaics, as well as a ceramist, designer of theatrical sets or tapestries. In his last works he carried out a separation between colour and drawing in such a way that his figures maintain their robotic forms defined by black lines.
