News from Home presents a series of abstract and fragmentary images of the everyday urban life of the New York of the 70s, accompanied by the personal narration of the filmmaker as she dispassionately reads her mother's letters, sometimes emotional, sometimes melancholic, sometimes sincere, but with a certain maternal manipulation of her native Belgium. Akerman juxtaposes the novelty and the autochthonous energy of the city with the palpable oddity of home and family in order to reflect the dilemma between emotional need and artistic independence.
