María Cañas was born in Seville in 1972. She's a multimedia artist with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Seville and a PhD in Aesthetics and the History of Philosophy from the same faculty. She directs Animalario TV Produccions, a creative space dedicated to the culture of recycling, appropriationism and artistic experimentation, from where she's developed her visual journey. Her work focuses on everyday situations lived on the edge: national festivities, the flamenco imaginary and the world of TV shows. Her projects are therefore linked to the use of found footage but revisited from a satirical point of view. Most notably, she's created the following audiovisuals: Aceite en llamas no deja cenizas (2011), El hombre del saco. Deje que los niños se acerquen a mí (2011), Holy Thriller (2011), Voy a decirle a Dios que te apuñale (2011), Mi lucha (2011), Dios se ríe en las alturas (2011), Fuera de serie ( 2012), Sé villana. La Sevilla del diablo (2013), Lo suyo (2018) and Padre no nuestro (2019). María Cañas has received numerous awards for her work, including first prize at the Universo Vídeo exhibition by the LABoral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial, an award for best film at the Gijón International Film Festival, an award at the Márgenes Festival in Madrid and the Román Gubern Film Essay Award.
